8-channel ES9038PRO DAC
With the ES9038PRO (which sits in the M17, Q7, K9 Pro ESS and M15S), FiiO has developed as experts in DAC technology. The R9 uses two ES9038PRO DACs, one for the left channel and one for the right channel. Each DAC chip contains 8 independent D/A converters, and these 8 channels are connected in parallel for a fully differential output. The result is precise, clear, but full-fledged sound.
Next-gen" headphone amplifier - THX AAA 788+
Inside the R9 you'll find an 8-channel THX AAA 788+ headphone amplifier design. Powered by a high voltage power supply, these headphone amplifiers are connected in parallel via 2x2 arrays for a four-way fully balanced design, significantly improving transient response. With an optimized circuit board layout, heat is effectively removed, ensuring that the R9 is capable of continuous and stable power output. The result is that the R9 is capable of delivering 7300 mW per channel at 32 Ohms, 102% higher than what the R7 is capable of.
Output Modes
With FiiO R9, you get the flexibility to easily integrate the device in many different contexts, without creating a tangle of cables. On the front panel you have a round switch that changes the "mode" you use:
PO: Enables only the headphone connections on the front (6.3/4.4mm and 4-pin XLR for headphone listening).
LO: Activates only the audio outputs on the back (Fixed max volume if you are going to use the R9 as a pure streamer).
PRE OUT: Activates only the audio outputs on the back (Variable volume if you are going to use the R9 as a streamer/DAC/PREAMP).
PO+PRE OUT: Activates both the front and rear audio outputs (Variable volume for listening to both headphones and speakers).
User interface
A vertical touch screen with a built-in Android-based operating system is installed on the front panel. This makes it possible to use all the apps that you normally find on your smartphone. In addition, the unit is ROON READY. One also has many other digital modes to choose from based on how you want to use the device:
Android Mode: Download and use your favorite apps: (Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify, Youtube etc.).
Pure Music Mode: Use FiiO's own music player where you can, among other things, play downloaded files.
USB DAC Mode: Receive digital signals from Tablet, Mobile, Computer. Very responsive mtp for movies and gaming.
Bluetooth Reciever Mode: Supports LDAC/SBC/AAC for receiving bluetooth signals.
Airplay Receiver Mode: Receive signals wirelessly from Apple products.
Roon Ready Mode: Roon Ready certified.
Coaxial/optical decoding mode: Receive digital signals via Coax and optical inputs.
HDMI Input Mode: Supports audio from devices such as game consoles and blue-ray players.
HDMI ARC Mode: Transmits sound to TV and projector.
With these possibilities, you can easily find countless ways to listen. If you stream from Roon and want to switch from headphones to speakers, turn the switch on the front panel. Do you have a hard drive or an SD card full of high-resolution files? Just plug them into the back and build your library. Send a song from your phone? Use bluetooth or Airplay. R9 supports micro-SD card up to 2 TB, Bluetooth 5.0 with reception of SBC/AAC and LDAC, transmits SBC/AAC/aptX/aptX HD/LDAC/LHDC.
A remote control that operates on the bluetooth protocol is included if you want to remotely control the volume from a distance. You can also upgrade the power supply with the FiiO PL50 to get even better sound.
